It’s no secret that we live in a world dominated by video. Social media algorithms have adapted to prioritize video-form content over static images, while video conferencing has become the norm in many workplaces. So, as wedding planners, it doesn’t surprise us that more couples than ever want to hire a videographer for their big day! While photos are essential for documenting the day, there’s just something about live video that brings those memories flooding back. Accordingly, we’re big proponents of hiring a wedding videographer! But what should you know before you make the leap to invest in this service? Consider these five things as you prepare to add a videographer to your vendor list. Visualize the DayFirst, try to visualize your wedding day. Will it be an intimate gathering with a laidback vibe? If so, hiring a videographer to film the entire day probably isn’t necessary. Consider saving some money by hiring them for your ceremony while a photographer covers the rest of the day! However, if you’re planning a vibrant, high-energy celebration, capturing the entire day on video is something you should highly consider. It all comes down to your priorities and what you want to document in live-action versus static images. Consider Your Absent Loved OnesThere will be friends and family members who will be unable to attend your wedding for various reasons. Whether it’s a grandmother who’s sick and unable to travel or a friend who’s stuck working, these folks will greatly appreciate your investment in documenting the day on video! While you can always live stream your ceremony on a platform like Facebook, the audio and image quality probably won’t give your loved ones the experience of actually being there. Whereas the equipment of a professional videographer will capture the day crystal-clear so your absent guests can take in every detail, listen to your vows, and feel like they were part of the day! Shape Your Budget With Video in MindNo matter how appealing it is to hire a wedding videographer, we know it can seem unrealistic in light of mounting costs and a strict budget. In fact, the number one reason couples tell us they didn’t hire a videographer is budget constraints. But there’s good news! As your wedding planner, we’ll take time to understand your priorities and shape your budget accordingly. So, if a high-quality wedding video is on your wishlist, we’ll do everything to ensure that investment is within reach! Plugging a realistic number in from the get-go will ensure you have that portion of your budget set aside once it’s time to hire someone. Find Someone Whose Personality Clicks With YoursIt may seem counterintuitive, but the personality of the person behind the camera on your wedding day matters! While your videographer is primarily there to capture the day as it happens, they’ll still provide occasional direction. So, you’ll want to ensure you connect with them before those moments arise. The last thing you want on your big day is to feel uncomfortable in front of the camera! We recommend scheduling a phone call, or even an in-person meeting, with a prospective videographer before hiring them. Doing this will give you the most accurate read on their personality, and you’ll have the opportunity to see if you click. In addition, it’s a good idea to request samples of a videographer’s finished work at your venue or a location with similar lighting. These samples will help you anticipate what your finished video could look like, so you can decide if their style aligns with your vision. Know What You’re Paying ForToo often, we hear from couples who didn’t understand what kind of finished product they were paying for when they signed their videographer’s contract. Many expect a full-length, edited video of their day when their contract is for a three-minute-long highlight video. It’s critical to do your research to ensure that the finished product stipulated by your contract is what you’re expecting. Never assume! Having said that, we encourage every couple to invest in a wedding videographer! While it means taking more time to schedule discovery calls and may involve a bit of budget wrangling, we promise that having a professionally made video of your wedding day will be worth it.
